The largest country in Latin America, Brazil, is currently experiencing its most severe and widespread drought in history due to a combination of a warming world and deforestation.
The worst drought ever recorded in Brazil has contributed to the wildfires in the Amazon rainforest. In August, the Pantanal, which includes the world’s largest tropical wetland area, saw a 3,901% increase in fires compared to August 2023, according to Greenpeace. This information is based on reports from Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research.
In early September, the smoke from wildfires unequivocally transformed São Paulo, a city with over 11 million residents and a metropolitan area of 21 million, into one of the top 10 most polluted major cities in the world.
Authorities from the Igarapé Institute reported over 50,000 active wildfires in early September. One factor contributing to Brazil’s crisis is the Earth’s rising temperatures, which have broken global records for 15 consecutive months.
Deforestation in the Cerrado region, covering over 20% of the country, is exacerbating the situation. A study in Nature showed a direct link between deforestation and droughts in Brazil, which relies on cascading moisture recycling for rainfall.
According to a paper published by the European Geosciences Union, “CMR” refers to the process of moisture transport between two locations on the continent, involving re-evaporation cycles along the way.
A climate researcher at the space research facility highlighted that this hydrological cycle is deteriorating due to deforestation. The researcher also suggested putting this information in capital letters.
We are heading toward an apocalyptic situation, and unfortunately, we only wake up at the last minute. While several factors can cause droughts, studies have shown that as our world warms, droughts become more frequent, longer, and more intense. It will get worse and worse.
Similarly, this year’s wildfires in Brazil are influenced by a warming planet. As the climate continues to heat up, wildfire seasons are getting longer and more severe.
