In a laboratory just outside the city of Fairbanks, scientists have made a startling discovery beneath the permafrost. Hidden beneath the ground is a 40-foot-long tunnel where the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) is located. This discovery has the potential to cause biological and environmental disasters.
For 64 years, this tunnel has been used to study the Alaskan landscape. Permafrost is a frozen layer beneath the ground, typically consisting of soil, gravel, and sand bound by ice. Scientists at the CRREL have been studying permafrost.
Ice samples are removed from tunnel walls, melted, and tested for diseases, viruses, and signs of life.
Permafrost is found in Canada, Russia, and Greenland, not just Alaska. It provides a waterproof habitat for certain animals and plants. However, recent findings have raised concerns about permafrost thawing.
The permafrost covers 85% of Alaska. Thus, it’s crucial to recognize that it’s not only icy soil. The permafrost contains not only fossils and bones but also harbors viruses and bacteria that could be thousands of years old, as discovered by scientists after just a few days of research.
Viruses trapped in permafrost, including Spanish flu and others like Pandoravirus, Cedratvirus, Megavirus, and Pacmanvirus, could potentially infect humans.
The ice has been found to contain viruses like Orthopoxvirus (smallpox, cowpox, etc.) and bacteria like Anthrax (Bacillus anthracis). Anthrax mainly affects animals, both livestock and wild, but it can also make humans sick if they come into contact with an infected animal or contaminated animal products.
Anthrax, while mainly affecting animals, can be a dangerous disease for humans. It spread rapidly and was weaponized during the Soviet Union’s biowarfare program, which began in 1885. Scientists are concerned about the melting of the permafrost because it may release these microbes, as the diseases have already been observed in some animals.
In Russia, scientists have contained an outbreak of anthrax from melting ice. The disease affected 2,000 reindeer and one boy before they controlled the spread. The permafrost will release more diseases as it melts due to global warming.
Alaska residents are already feeling the effects of climate change, including wildfires, extreme weather, and rising sea levels. Melting permafrost is causing houses, infrastructure, roads, and even cemeteries to collapse.

Matthew 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
Matthew 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
