Scientists Concerned about Invasive Ant Species Taking Over the World

Non-native ants introduced to new areas of the world are disrupting biodiversity and biogeographical patterns, and scientists are concerned about their negative impact on the planet’s natural ecosystems. Invasive alien species are organisms that have established themselves outside their natural habitat.

Invasive species can harm native plants and animals, decreasing biodiversity and possibly causing extinction. These species spread in various ways, such as through wind, water, and other animals, but human interference is the primary cause of their widespread distribution.

The global transportation of various goods and tourism has led to an increase in invasive species worldwide. Scientists recognize the destructive impact on natural ecosystems and are dedicated to finding solutions.

Researchers are investigating the distribution patterns and impacts of 309 non-native ant species. They aim to understand why these species have spread and how they affect the planet. Although invasive ants may seem insignificant, these tiny insects play a crucial role in the planet’s ecosystem and can cause significant damage.

A recent study by the Department of Ecology and Evolution at UNIL found that nearly 170 years of ant species’ historical distribution have been altered. In that time frame, at least 520 ant species have been transported outside their native ranges, highlighting their significant role on our planet.

Due to human influence, invasive ant species have infiltrated 78% of the world’s countries in just 200 years, significantly disrupting natural patterns shaped by 120 million years of ant evolution. Scientists are concerned about the extensive damage caused, including threats to biodiversity, extinction of native species, and significant economic losses totaling billions of dollars annually.

Invasive ants disrupt ecosystems, kill other organisms, and consume resources, which can destroy natural habitats. This destruction intensifies the negative effects of climate change. It’s surprising, but these tiny ants contribute to climate change.

The loss of biodiversity can disrupt an ecosystem’s functioning and lead to severe weather issues. Invasive ant species are contributing to a biodiversity crisis, putting approximately one million plant and animal species at risk of extinction.

Experts estimate that invasive ant species have caused $51 billion in economic losses worldwide. Invasive ants damage crops by eating fruits or seeds and tunneling large systems that affect crop growth, making them a farmer’s worst nightmare.

Ants can infest gardens and homes. They are important for the planet’s health because they help to aerate the soil, allowing water and oxygen to reach plant roots. Ants also bring seeds into their tunnels, enriching the soil with nutrients. If ants became extinct, the entire food chain would collapse.
