Are open borders inviting a terrorist attack in America?

With the Fourth of July approaching and large crowds gathering to watch fireworks, the likelihood of a terrorist attack rises significantly, not only in major cities but in any city across America. It’s been over 23 years since 9/11, and despite improved surveillance and airport security, the world has changed considerably.

With advancements in technology and affordable internet, the threat of a major terrorist attack on U.S. soil is currently very high, with cities like New York City and Washington, D.C. being vulnerable, according to experts.

America’s open borders have led to an influx of people worldwide. According to a retired NYPD inspector with 15 years of counterterrorism experience, the likelihood of a terrorist attack on the homeland has increased due to various factors coming together. With the open borders policy, there have been 10 to 20 million illegals let into the country with little or no vetting.

A 22-year-old illegal immigrant from Lebanon who was apprehended by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents on March 9 admitted he was a member of the Hezbollah terrorist organization, planned to make a bomb, and hoped to go to New York City.

A retired NYPD inspector with 15 years of counterterrorism experience mentioned that the recent arrest of eight Tajikistan nationals with ISIS ties, who allegedly crossed the southern border illegally, is an “enormous red flag.” He also expressed concern about the millions of unvetted individuals entering the border post-9/11, calling it “utterly incomprehensible.”

“I will tell you, and I’m not giving anything up by this; it is a bio-chem event for deploying that weaponry. You get the most potential loss of life. You get contamination in an enclosed environment, and it’s achievable,” said a retired NYPD inspector with 15 years of counterterrorism.

“Imagine if Hezbollah were to purchase a nuclear weapon from the black market and detonate it in a harbor. This scenario has always been a nightmare. However, even more concerning are the attempts we’ve seen worldwide using biological or chemical agents. This type of scenario is truly a nightmare, especially considering the damage caused by COVID.”

“You’d have a serious event if you set off something like that in a train station or on a train. It’s something that terrorism experts constantly work to prevent and worry about.”

Potential new attack risks should be assessed in a criminal context, considering means, motive, and opportunity. The world has shrunk since 9/11, with drones and widespread internet connectivity reaching previously isolated areas.

Using something like an Elon Musk satellite, you can establish an uplink and get online even from the mountains of the Hindu Kush. If you are still involved in terror activities, you have had significant time to develop AI capabilities since 9/11.

Threats would likely come from current hot spots around the globe, including the Middle East, where Iran is a live threat and is still seeking revenge for the killing of Qasem Soleimani, an Iranian major general who was taken out in a 2020 U.S. drone strike.

Former CIA Deputy Director Mike Morrell and FBI Director Wray expressed concerns about the terror threat posed by vulnerabilities at the U.S.-Mexico border. Wray also highlighted increased concerns about potential attacks by foreign terrorists.

FBI Director Wray reported disrupting multiple terrorist attacks across the country. The department requested $11.3 billion for FY25, which is $661 million more than last year. Attorney General Merrick Garland also warned of increasing terror threats since Oct. 7.
