Resentment and bitterness are sinful emotions

When you are offended or disappointed by others and allow the hurt to enter your heart, bitterness, and resentment will take root, and it becomes a sin.

Bitterness and resentment can have negative effects on physical health, mental health, spiritual well-being, and relationships.

The emotion being referred to is destructive and originates from hate, which is often compared to the act of murder.

1 John 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

Having an unforgiving spirit and negative, critical attitude is sinful and self-defeating, as it leads to bitterness and resentment.

Hebrews 12:15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.

It is impossible for someone to experience peace and happiness if they have sin in their hearts. However, God can help you overcome this sin. To do so, you need to repent and ask God to forgive you for any bitterness or resentment you may have.

Additionally, you can ask God to forgive anyone who has hurt you, and towards whom you may feel bitter or resentful, just as you have been forgiven.

Ephesians 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

Look for opportunities to demonstrate love to the person who offended you or you offended.

Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

God can help you cleanse your memory. Instead of holding grudges and hurt, try to forgive those who have wronged you. Take the extra step and ask God to forgive your offender as well. By forgiving and then asking God to forgive your offender, you release yourself and allow God to bless both you and the other person.

Colossians 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man has a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

If someone wrongs you and doesn’t repent, leave it to God to avenge, not yourself. “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.

Proverbs 25:21 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

Proverbs 25:22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee.

Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

1 Peter 2:23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

Matthew 6:14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

Matthew 6:15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Romans 12:14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.

Romans 12:15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

Romans 12:16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

1 John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

1 John 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
