Geophysicists warn that California in America may be at risk of a generation-defining massive earthquake following a record number of mini-quakes across the state in 2024. The warning comes just days after a 4.4 magnitude earthquake rocked the greater Los Angeles area on Monday, originating from a site close to LA’s Chinatown.
“In 2024, we’ve experienced more earthquakes than in any year since 1988,” stated Dr. Lucy Jones, a geophysicist at Caltech. “This trend is expected to continue.”
Experts assert that a major earthquake in Southern California, typically defined as 7.0 magnitude or higher, could result in nearly 2,000 deaths, at least 50,000 injuries, and over $200 billion in damages.
Dr. Jones noted that small earthquakes do not relieve tension in underground plate tectonics or prevent “The Big One.” “The most consistent feature of earthquakes is the ratio of large to small,” said Dr. Jones.
“According to the CalTech researcher, for every earthquake of magnitude seven, there are approximately 10 earthquakes of magnitude six, 100 earthquakes of magnitude five, 1,000 earthquakes of magnitude four, and so on. Therefore, if the frequency of magnitude four earthquakes increases, the likelihood of experiencing a larger earthquake would also increase by a comparable amount.”
In 2024, a series of small earthquakes suggested to many seismology experts that a major high-magnitude earthquake may be imminent. Southern California has experienced a relatively calm period, with only about five magnitude four earthquakes each year for the past two decades. However, the recent cluster of mini-quakes has signaled the end of this tranquil period.
In previous decades, dating back to 1932, the sun-soaked region typically experienced around 10 to 12 earthquakes of magnitude four and above each year. “So, this year is more active, similar to what we used to see,” Jones said. With over four months left in 2024, 13 quakes of magnitude four or above have already been made.
The minor earthquake on Monday caused minimal damage. However, local news reported water shooting out of a rupture near Pasadena City Hall, where firefighters actively assisted civilians.
In a June study published in Science Advances, scientists used advanced underwater scanning techniques to map the Cascadia Subduction Zone in unprecedented detail, supporting Dr. Jones’ perspective on the increased risk of a major earthquake.
The fault has been found to split into four segments rather than one continuous strip, in contrast to many other fault lines. “The accuracy and resolution of this discovery are truly unprecedented,” stated a research scientist at the Geological Survey of Canada.
The discovery suggests that multiple tectonic plates could slide under each other, creating more pressure and severe earthquakes. The researchers concluded that the Cascadia Subduction Zone could unleash a magnitude nine-plus quake, while California’s San Andreas fault is poised for an up to 8.3 magnitude quake.
If a magnitude 9 earthquake struck the US West Coast, it could generate 100-foot tsunamis, causing over 10,000 deaths and $80 billion in damages in just Oregon and Washington. According to experts, major events in this subduction zone occur roughly every 500 years.
