Pentagon on high alert: Russia and China advance space militarization

The Pentagon is monitoring Russia and China for their aggressive military activities in space, including satellite attack drills and anti-satellite weapon development.

Concerns about conflicts extending into outer space are prompting the US to bolster its space defense capabilities. Experts warn that space could become the next battlefield in our technology-driven world. Are we entering a new “Star Wars” era where space conflicts are a reality?

On May 17, 2024, Russia launched a Soyuz 2.1b vehicle, which American defense analysts claim carries a satellite capable of attacking other satellites, highlighting the militarization of space. Earlier, on April 24, Russia vetoed a UN resolution from the U.S. and Japan aimed at preventing a nuclear arms race in outer space, with China abstaining.

In May 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in China to strengthen ties and explore alternatives to U.S. influence. Earlier, on October 23, 2023, Russia launched a Soyuz rocket from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, carrying two reconnaissance satellites, Cosmos-2570 and Cosmos-2571.

On December 28, 2023, the X-37B, America’s reusable robotic spacecraft, lifted off from Cape Canaveral. It can re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and land like a spaceplane. Two weeks earlier, China launched its reusable spaceplane, the Shenlong. Earlier, on December 9, a Zhuque-2 Y-3 rocket carrying three satellites—Honghu, Honghu-2, and TY-33—was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.

On January 28, 2024, Iran launched three satellites using a Simorgh rocket, despite regional tensions. Several Western nations condemned the launch, alleging it supports Iran’s ballistic missile program. In January 2020, India highlighted its military capabilities by displaying a DRDO anti-satellite weapons system during Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi.

Out of 3,236 satellites, just 66 are owned or operated by the military, as reported by Breaking Defense. However, rising competition among countries to develop space capabilities raises concerns about the potential for combat beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

SPACECOM was disestablished in 2002, with its responsibilities and forces merging into United States Strategic Command. It was re-established in August 2019, with a renewed emphasis on space as a warfighting domain.

SPACECOM monitors around 15 missile launches daily across Ukraine, Iraq, and North Korea. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has intensified space conflicts, escalating the technological race for advantages.

The main concern for the U.S. is China, particularly with the Shenlong spaceplane, capable of long missions and orbit changes. Additionally, U.S. commanders see Russia’s Cosmos 2570 and 2571 satellites as tests of “kill vehicles” designed to destroy other satellites.

The United States is set to send astronauts back to the Moon for the first time since 1972 through NASA’s Artemis program. The program aims to establish a permanent base there to support missions to Mars.

This exciting prospect has inspired several start-ups to create innovative technologies for space exploration, including the Supernova satellite bus by Seattle-based Portal Space Systems. The Supernova boasts enhanced orbital agility and a range that is 50 times greater than current spacecraft.

The competition for military dominance in outer space continues. SPACECOM calls on the U.S. to be “stewards for military space” through its ‘Vision for 2020’ program, aiming to integrate space forces into warfighting capabilities across all conflicts.

China’s 2024 lunar mission began with the May 3 launch of Chang’e-6, which aims to collect soil and rock samples from the Moon’s far side. This is the first of three planned uncrewed missions this decade, representing a significant advancement in China’s lunar exploration.

The country known as the “Red Dragon” is China.
