Police swarmed a German railway station as passengers displayed symptoms of a lethal virus with no known vaccine.
Chaos broke out as officers closed off tracks 7 and 8 at Hamburg Central Station for several hours, causing commuters to scramble for safety. Emergency personnel in full protective suits boarded the ICE high-speed train from Frankfurt.
The train was evacuated because two passengers on board were showing symptoms of the Marburg virus, which is related to Ebola. One of the passengers is reported to be a 26-year-old German medical student.
He and his girlfriend boarded the train from Frankfurt to Hamburg on Wednesday afternoon. During the ride, both developed flu-like symptoms.
The Marburg virus starts with flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, and muscle pains. Within days, those infected suffer from excessive bleeding, a rash, extreme lethargy, and blood-stained vomit and diarrhea.
According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, the virus kills about half of the people it infects. In one outbreak, 88% of those infected died. The virus is transmitted to humans from fruit bats and then through contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals.
There are currently no specific treatments or vaccines available, but the World Health Organization (WHO) is working on developing a range of blood products, drugs, and immune therapies.
It’s been reported that the student had recently flown in from Rwanda, where six people have died from an outbreak of Marburg and another 20 have been infected.
“While there, he had contact with a patient who was later diagnosed by doctors as being infected with the virus, which has a fatality rate of up to 88%. It remains unclear whether the two individuals have been infected with the Marburg virus,” said a fire department spokesperson.
The student and his girlfriend were taken to the University Hospital Eppendorf (UKE) in a specialized infectious disease ambulance operated by the Hamburg Fire Department. According to the website, around 200 passengers were on board the train, along with two passengers. “We now have to find out whether they could have become infected quickly,” said Hamburg’s fire department spokesperson.
The operation was terminated promptly at 5 pm, leading to the station’s reopening. Following Rwanda’s announcement of a Marburg virus outbreak, authorities have swiftly implemented measures on gatherings to contain the spread. Currently, the majority of victims are health workers in the intensive care unit.
Last week, the country’s health minister, Sabin Nsanzimana, emphatically stated that there are 20 confirmed cases of infection and six deaths due to the virus. The majority of these cases and deaths are among healthcare workers, particularly in the intensive care unit.
