A safety researcher at OpenAI has described the global race toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) as a “very risky gamble with significant potential downsides” for humanity, leading him to resign.
Steven Adler is among several prominent AI researchers who have expressed concerns about the rapidly advancing capabilities of these systems, particularly AGI, which could exceed human cognitive abilities. Adler’s resignation on Monday, accompanied by alarming warnings, adds to a growing trend of employees leaving the company due to these concerns.
Adler, who led safety-related research and programs for product launches and speculative long-term AI systems at OpenAI, issued a series of urgent posts on X on Monday afternoon to announce his abrupt departure from the company. He emphasized, “An AGI race is a risky gamble with significant downsides.”
Additionally, he revealed that he is “pretty terrified by the pace of AI development.” These stark warnings came alongside his announcement of resignation after four years at OpenAI. In his exit message, Adler characterized his time there as “a wild ride with many chapters” and affirmed that he would “miss numerous aspects of it.”
He criticized the rapid developments in AGI among leading AI labs and global superpowers. “When I think about raising a future family or saving for retirement, I wonder: Will humanity even reach that point?” Adler also discussed AI alignment, which ensures AI systems pursue human goals and values.
The race to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a risky gamble with serious downsides. No lab currently has a solution to AI alignment, and the faster we push forward, the less likely we are to find one in time.
Even labs that genuinely want to act responsibly face pressure to cut corners, leading to potentially disastrous outcomes. I hope labs will be transparent about the safety regulations to prevent this.
I’ll be taking a break to consider my next steps. Meanwhile, I’d like to hear from my followers about the most important and overlooked AI safety and policy ideas. OpenAI has faced controversies from disagreements over my main concern: AI safety.
In 2023, the board dismissed Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, due to concerns about his leadership and approach to AI safety. The board reported that he was “not consistently candid” in communications, which hindered their responsibilities and prioritized new technologies over safety.
Only five days later, he was reinstated after pressure from employees and investors. Additionally, two prominent AI researchers left the company, one of whom, Leike, cited a decline in safety culture as a reason for his departure.
In November, 26-year-old Suchir Balaji was found dead in his San Francisco home, only three months after accusing OpenAI of copyright violations related to ChatGPT. A former OpenAI employee, Balaji had believed the company could benefit society.
While police ruled his death a suicide and found no evidence of foul play, his parents, Poornima Ramarao and Balaji Ramamurthy, question this conclusion, citing blood found in their son’s bathroom, which they believe suggests a struggle. Balaji had resigned from OpenAI in August over ethical concerns, stating he no longer wanted to contribute to technology he felt could harm society.
Daniel Kokotajlo, a former governance researcher at OpenAI, told Fortune in August that nearly half of the company’s staff, specifically those focused on the long-term risks of super powerful AI, had left the company.
A growing number of former employees are expressing concerns about AI and its safety protocols. Stuart Russell, a professor at UC Berkeley, warned in the Financial Times that the “AGI race is a race towards the edge of a cliff,” noting that even CEOs involved recognize the potential for human extinction due to our inability to control systems more intelligent than ourselves.
John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.
2 Corinthians 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
Revelation 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
Revelation 13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
Revelation 13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
Revelation 13:12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
Revelation 13:13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
Revelation 13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
Revelation 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
