Public schools in Oklahoma are now required to teach the Bible

Oklahoma’s public schools are now mandated to include teachings about the Bible and the Ten Commandments, according to the state’s top education official, Ryan Walters. In a memorandum, Walters stated that the Bible and the Ten Commandments are fundamental aspects of Western civilization.

He said the decision was effective immediately.“This is not merely an educational directive but a crucial step in ensuring our students grasp the core values and historical context of our country,” Walters, a Republican who was elected to the role in 2022, said in the memorandum.

He noted the “substantial influence” the Bible and Ten Commandments had on the country’s founders and the Constitution.

President and chief executive of the nonprofit group Americans United for Separation of Church and State called the decision a “transparent, unconstitutional effort to indoctrinate and religiously coerce public school students.

“This is textbook Christian Nationalism.”Walters is abusing the power of his public office to impose his religious beliefs on everyone else’s children,” Laser said in a statement.

The Oklahoma Education Association strongly condemned the decision, asserting that the order directly contradicts a state Supreme Court ruling that affirmed school districts’ authority to select the books available in their classrooms.

“The State Superintendent cannot usurp local control and compel education professionals to violate the Constitution,” the group said in a statement on X. The association added that teaching about the historical context of religion is permissible, but teaching religious doctrine isn’t.

Walters insists that schools should teach the Bible as a historical document, emphasizing its role in American history. He firmly believes that this decision will thwart efforts from the radical left to rewrite history by removing the Bible from schools.

Louisiana’s governor unequivocally signed into law a requirement for the display of the Ten Commandments in all public school classrooms, reigniting intense debates about the separation of church and state. Civil liberties groups, including Americans United for Separation of Church and State, have wasted no time in challenging this law in court.

The opening of the country’s first religious charter school, St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School, was blocked by Oklahoma’s Supreme Court.

The court unequivocally declared that the school violated both the state and U.S. constitutions. The school plans to appeal the case to the Supreme Court.

A former AP history teacher, once a Teacher of the Year Award finalist, criticizes “woke ideology” in public education, calling teachers’ unions terrorist organizations and labeling schools as “Epstein Island” for sexual predators.
