Will Trump’s “Iron Dome” missile defense make Americans safer?

President Trump aims to establish a defensive iron dome over the United States, similar to the system used by Israel to protect itself from rocket attacks by Hamas and Hezbollah.

“The Iron Dome for America” directs the Pentagon to develop a “next-generation missile defense shield” designed to protect against threats from any adversary. Trump’s order references former President Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative, which critics referred to as “Star Wars.”

A new executive order from the president tasks the Pentagon with developing an initial plan within 60 days to defend the country against various missile attacks. “We protect other countries, but we fail to protect ourselves adequately.”

Current U.S. missile defenses are neither designed nor capable of defending against the ballistic missiles of Russia and China, according to a report by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service released on December 30.

Trump stated in January at the House Republican Retreat in Florida, “When Ronald Reagan wanted to accomplish this many years ago, we didn’t have the necessary technology, but now we possess exceptional technology.”

The order addresses potential threats such as ballistic, hypersonic, advanced cruise missiles, and other next-generation aerial attacks. Trump emphasized deploying new space-based sensors to identify, track, and intercept these missiles.

“During a recent House Armed Services Committee hearing, former Army General Jack Keane emphasized the importance of studying and deploying defense systems like the Iron Dome. He highlighted the advancements in hypersonic and cruise missiles by Russia, which could pose significant global threats.”

One of the main goals of the new missile defense system is deterrence, making enemies doubt the effectiveness of their first strike. We face various threats, from drones to intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), posed by state actors like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.

Trump directed the Pentagon to create a defense system against aerial threats like ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles. This plan involves deploying existing technologies and developing new tools, including space-based interceptors and particle beams.

All entities that could pose a threat to the United States in various ways include not only state actors but also non-state actors, such as terrorist groups and drug cartels, who may possess weapons that require our defensive measures. I believe this will lead to developing a comprehensive defense system,” said a former deputy national security advisor during Trump’s first term.

Cost may be a significant obstacle, but Republican lawmakers are developing a funding package. Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is helping to free up money for such projects.

The Missile Defense Agency is set to complete the initial phase of its project by December 2026, with at least three additional phases scheduled to follow at two-year intervals.

This month, the Pentagon will assess current technological capabilities in partnership with industry leaders. President Trump firmly insists that all components of this defense shield must be produced in the United States.
