Just over a month after China’s “Sputnik moment” in AI with DeepSeek, another announcement has sparked speculation about a groundbreaking breakthrough.

The creators of Manus, which launched last Friday, assert that it is the “world’s first” fully autonomous AI agent. This groundbreaking technology can perform complex tasks such as booking holidays, purchasing property, and creating podcasts without human intervention.

The AI developer described Manus as the next evolution in artificial intelligence, offering a glimpse of artificial general intelligence (AGI) that matches or exceeds human intelligence. “This isn’t just another chatbot; it’s an autonomous agent that bridges the gap between conception and execution,” he explained in a demonstration video.

“Manus goes beyond generating ideas by delivering accurate results, signaling a new era of human-machine collaboration. Shortly after its launch, invitation codes for early testers were being sold online for 50,000 yuan (about £5,300).

Last month, the OpenAI CEO remarked that AGI is “coming into view,” potentially signaling a pivotal historical moment.

“The future is approaching in ways we cannot ignore, and the impact on our society and economy will be significant,” wrote Anthropic CEO in a blog post. He predicts that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could emerge as early as 2026. In a 15,000-word essay published in October 2024, Amodei emphasized that AGI—“powerful AI”—will likely arrive sooner than many expect due to the rapid development of large language model (LLM) systems.

In his forecast, Amodei predicts that AI will surpass the intelligence of a Nobel Prize winner and be capable of performing tasks similar to those described by Manus AI. He notes that it can take actions online, provide or follow human directions, order materials, direct experiments, and create videos, all with a skill level exceeding that of the most capable humans.

Manus’s website highlights similar capabilities, but during initial testing, some users have noticed the AI making errors that humans would typically catch. Manus is focused on resolving these issues before a wider release and uses the limited rollout to identify problems. A spokesperson stated, “The goal of the current closed beta is to stress-test the system and gather valuable insights.”

“It will take more rigorous testing to determine if Manus can be classified as artificial general intelligence (AGI). It already impacts discussions on human-level AI, much like ChatGPT pushed researchers to improve assessment methods beyond the outdated Turing test.
