Google opens its most powerful AI models to everyone

Bill Gates believes that artificial intelligence could one day be capable of teaching schoolchildren and treating the sick. Recent advancements in AI development have led him to contemplate what “human life might be like in the near future, which is dominated by machines.”

Gates recognizes AI’s risks to humanity. In 2023, he signed a letter declaring it a “societal-scale threat similar to pandemics and nuclear war.” Other signatories included OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis.

Governments worldwide have yet to regulate AI and its potential negative consequences, such as eliminating entire industries and the “loss of millions of jobs.”

Google has launched the Gemini 2.0 AI model suite for everyone as part of its strategy to invest in “AI agents” amid increasing competition in the AI landscape.

Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic are firmly committed to creating agentic AI—powerful models that can efficiently handle complex, multistep user tasks. On Wednesday, Google launched Gemini 2.0, its most advanced artificial intelligence model suite to date, and it is now accessible to everyone.

In December, the company provided access to developers and trusted testers with a “general release.” The model suite features 2.0 Flash, ideal for high-volume tasks, 2.0 Pro Experimental for coding performance, and 2.0 Flash-Lite, the company’s most cost-effective model.

Gemini Flash charges developers 10 cents per million tokens for text, image, and video inputs. In contrast, its more affordable version, Flash-Lite, costs just 0.75 cents for the same inputs. The ongoing releases are part of Google’s larger strategy to invest significantly in “AI agents,” especially as competition intensifies among tech giants and startups in the AI sector.

Companies like Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic are leading the charge toward agentic AI—models that can efficiently execute complex, multistep tasks on behalf of users, eliminating the need for users to guide them through each step manually.

“Over the past year, we’ve been focused on creating advanced agentic models that understand their surroundings, think ahead, and act on your behalf under your supervision. In a December blog post, Google mentioned that Gemini 2.0 features improvements like native image, audio output, and tool use. These developments will help us build AI agents closer to our vision of a universal assistant.”

Anthropic, an Amazon-backed AI startup founded by former OpenAI executives, is a strong competitor in developing AI agents. In October, it announced that its AI agents could perform complex tasks on computers, interpreting screens, entering text, navigating websites, and executing tasks across various software with real-time internet browsing.

Anthropic’s chief science officer stated that the tool can perform tasks with “tens or even hundreds of steps,” similar to how we use computers. OpenAI recently introduced a feature called Operator to automate functions like planning vacations, filling out forms, making reservations, and ordering groceries.

A Microsoft-backed startup describes an Operator as “an agent that can go online to perform tasks for you.” Recently, OpenAI introduced Deep Research, allowing an AI agent to compile complex research reports on user-selected topics. Similarly, in December, Google launched its own Deep Research tool as a “research assistant” that explores complex issues and compiles reports.
