CEOs assert that artificial intelligence (AI) poses a significant threat that could lead to the end of humanity within the next decade. These leaders represent major corporations, not small businesses.
119 influential CEOs from a range of top companies are making an impact, including Walmart’s Doug McMillon, Coca-Cola’s James Quincey, and leaders from prominent IT firms like Xerox and Zoom, alongside CEOs from the pharmaceutical, media, and manufacturing industries.
Artificial intelligence could potentially eliminate the human race within the next decade, warned the ‘Godfather of AI.
Prof. Geoffrey Hinton has openly acknowledged his regrets about his role in creating this technology. He firmly asserts that our rapid development is comparable to the Industrial Revolution, yet he warns that machines may very well “take control this time.”
In a recent article for Physics this year, Professor Hinton called for stricter government regulation of AI companies. He has previously stated that there is a chance that AI could lead to the downfall of humanity within the next thirty years.
We’ve never faced the challenge of dealing with entities more intelligent than ourselves. How many instances can you think of where a more intelligent being has been controlled by a less intelligent one? There are very few examples of that. In the 1980s, Professor Hinton developed a method for detecting patterns in data and identifying elements in images, crucial for modern AI.
He remarked that technology has advanced “much faster” than expected, making humans seem like “three-year-olds” next to AI, which he likened to “the grown-ups.” He compared this to the Industrial Revolution, where machines reduced the importance of human strength for tasks like digging ditches.
“Technology is replacing human intelligence, and machines will lead the way.” Professor Hinton predicted that AI would dramatically change everyday life, much like the Industrial Revolution did, as noted by Charles Dickens.
He noted that the future of life with this technology will largely depend on how political systems handle it. He is concerned that, despite potential productivity gains benefiting society, the rewards may only go to the wealthy, leading to job losses and increased poverty.
“These machines are more intelligent than we are. During the Industrial Revolution, machines didn’t take over because they were stronger; we maintained control due to our intelligence. Now, however, there is a real threat that advanced machines could gain control. I hope other experts are right to feel optimistic about the future of this technology.”
Prof. Hinton expressed concern that relying on large companies’ profit motives will not ensure safety in technology development. He believes that government regulation is necessary to compel these companies to conduct more safety research, as we have no prior experience with technologies that may surpass human intelligence.
He has previously stated that there is a chance that AI could lead to the downfall of humanity within the next thirty years. Now he believes it could happen in 10 years.
In 2022, Prof. Hinton said he regretted ever working on AI. Now, three years later, AI has developed “much faster” than expected, potentially making humans like “three-year-olds” compared to AI as “the grown-ups.”
