On Sunday evening, an explosion in Tel Aviv was declared a terror attack by Israeli police and Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic security agency. Hamas’s armed wing, Al-Qassam Brigades, claimed responsibility for the explosion in a statement on its Telegram account.
The police reported that the individual suspected of carrying the explosive material was killed, and a passerby sustained injuries.
“This was a terror attack involving the explosion of a powerful explosive,” stated the Israel Police Spokesperson’s Unit and the Shin Bet Spokesperson’s Unit in a joint statement on Monday.
“After the explosion, a passerby was moderately injured, according to medical sources, and was taken to receive medical treatment,” it added.
A police official told CNN early Monday that “a major disaster was averted, and dozens could have been killed.”
The official declined to comment on the potential target. As stated in the joint announcement, the Tel Aviv District Commander carried out extensive searches across the greater city area following the explosion.
Police reported receiving numerous calls about a loud explosion on HaLehi Street. Hamas claimed the “martyrdom operation” was done with the help of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s armed wing, the Al-Quds Brigades.
“The Brigades confirm that suicide attacks inside the occupied territories will increase as long as the occupation’s massacres, the displacement of civilians, and the policy of assassinations continue.”
The explosion took place as the city was under heightened alert due to increasing regional tensions stemming from the conflict in Gaza. The nature of the event and its connection to the complex security situation remained unclear.
