South Sudan floods: first example of Mass Population Permanently Displaced

The displacement of millions of people in South Sudan is a direct result of conflict and historic flooding.

Devastating floods this summer alone have displaced nearly 150,000 more. This may be the first permanent mass displacement caused by our warming world.

The pressures from a planet that is overheating are worsening political instability and conflict in South Sudan and have contributed to the displacement of approximately 2.3 million people as of July 2023.

65% of South Sudanese refugees are children, and the prevalence of cholera and other water-borne infections is on the rise due to stagnant floodwaters, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The incidence of malaria, respiratory tract infections, acute watery diarrhea, and snakebites is increasing. Our warming world is projected to intensify Earth’s water cycle, leading to a higher likelihood of extreme precipitation events and an increased risk of flooding, as indicated by a study published in Scientific Reports.

“Results indicate an increase in extreme precipitation and flood events across all climate regions, with the intensity rising as water availability increases from dry to wet regions,” UNHCR states that climate change and displacement are increasingly interconnected.

Our warming planet is causing more extreme weather events. Most forcibly displaced people live in countries highly vulnerable to climate change, per UNHCR.

This often leads to a vicious cycle because coping with worsening weather and climate conditions is one of several challenges that make it difficult for people to return home safely and experience sustained peace.

The UNHCR’s report emphasizes that without assistance to prepare for, withstand, and recover from climate-related shocks and stresses, people face increased risks of being displaced again. Addressing climate change as a root cause of displacement is crucial to breaking this cycle and finding lasting solutions.

The International Crisis Group suggests collaborating “with South Sudanese authorities, religious leaders, community elders, and others to reduce tensions, ensure security for displaced and host communities, and safeguard the needs of both.”
