Archaeologists Uncover New Evidence Supporting Bible Story About Moses Leading People to The Promised Land

The Old Testament describes an area known as the Promised Land or Canaan. According to the text, the Israelites arrived in the city around 1406 and 1407 BC after wandering the desert for 40 years.

Joshua 5:6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord: unto whom the Lord sware that he would not shew them the land, which the Lord sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.

The latest findings from the researchers indicate that actual artifacts, such as broken jar handles engraved with the name of a king mentioned in the Bible, provide additional evidence supporting the Biblical account of Moses.

In the story of Exodus, the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt. After enduring ten terrible plagues, the Pharaoh agreed to release them. Moses led them out of Egypt and miraculously parted the Red Sea to allow his people to safely escape. Once the group reached the Sinai Peninsula, Moses received the Ten Commandments from God in Exodus chapter 20.

The Israelites pressed on with their journey and ultimately arrived at the southern border of Canaan. Regrettably, their reluctance to enter the city led to God condemning them to spend decades in the wilderness. Their time at the oasis of Kadesh Bernea allowed the Israelites to traverse the desert until they reached the eastern border of Canaan.

After Moses died and was buried on Mount Nebo, the Book of Joshua states that Joshua stepped in as the leader. He led the people to the Promised Land, crossing the River Jordan and conquering Jericho.

Deuteronomy 34:5 So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 34:6 And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

Deuteronomy 34:7 And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.

Deuteronomy 34:8 And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days: so the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.

Deuteronomy 34:9 And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the Lord commanded Moses.

Deuteronomy 34:10 And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face,

Deuteronomy 34:11 In all the signs and the wonders, which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land,

Deuteronomy 34:12 And in all that mighty hand, and in all the great terror which Moses shewed in the sight of all Israel.

In March 2019, the research team conducted an extensive excavation that uncovered walls with rows of large, white rocks. The white walls unquestionably served as retaining walls for farming terraces, creating flat planting areas and preventing erosion of steeper soil. This architectural feat showcases the remarkable advancement of the Israelites.

Additionally, the pottery unearthed at the site bore a stamp on the handle that unmistakably proclaimed “of the King,” linking it to King Hezekiah’s reign in Judah in 701 BC.

The Bible describes the life of King Hezekiah in the Book of Kings, chapters 18-20. The king reopened the Temple of Solomon, also known as ‘the First Temple,’ built on the spot where God originally created Adam. Furthermore, Hezekiah is reported to have forcefully smashed the bronze snake statue God commanded Moses to make.

The pottery fragments unearthed have been accurately dated to the Israelites’ arrival in the Promised Land after 40 years of wandering.

Additionally, the team unearthed numerous pottery fragments dating back 900 years, providing clear evidence of the Jewish community’s prosperous existence over an extended period.
