The “doomsday glacier,” Thwaites Glacier, could cause a global rise in sea levels if it collapses entirely. Scientists from the British Antarctic Survey measured the glacier, which is as large as Great Britain or Florida, using underwater robots.
If it collapses, experts warn that global sea levels could rise by two feet (65cm), submerging large areas underwater. The Thwaites Glacier, spanning about 74.5 miles (120km) across, has seen ice flow double into the sea from the 1990s to the 2010s.
This contributes about eight percent to the current global sea level rise rate of 4.6mm/year. The glacier, up to 13,100 feet (4,000m) thick, is retreating due to ocean warming and is considered unstable due to its depth and shallow coastal area.
The collapse of the Thwaites Glacier could raise global sea levels by 3-6 feet, with potential for more from the entire West Antarctic Ice Sheet. The study aims to predict how and when Thwaites will change.
A marine geophysicist at BAS believes Thwaites Glacier retreat will accelerate within the next century. Due to its position, Thwaites is exceptionally vulnerable. It has been retreating for over 80 years, accelerating considerably in the past 30 years, and our findings indicate it is set to retreat further and faster.
If the entire West Antarctic Ice Sheet collapses, it will raise global sea levels by an alarming 10.8 feet (3.3 meters).The situation would have a devastating effect on millions living in coastal areas.
