Scientists are monitoring asteroid 2024 YR4, discovered on December 27, 2024, by the Rio Hurtado Observatory in Chile. It may pose a threat to Earth.
This object is about twice as far from Earth as the Moon and measures between 40 and 100 meters. Initially, scientists estimated a 1 in 83 chance of a collision with Earth, but new observations have raised that risk to 1 in 43.
NASA is closely monitoring asteroid 2024 YR4, set to pass on December 22, 2032. It has topped its Sentry Risk List with an unusually high collision chance. Experts call this situation “unique,” as it is the highest likelihood of collision observed since tracking began. NASA is actively tracking and updating the asteroid’s collision probability.
The network of telescopes, including the WISE Space Telescope (which completed its mission on August 8, 2024), is crucial for detecting near-Earth objects. NASA plans to launch an infrared telescope to find asteroids, improving their threat detection capabilities.
In early January, the Very Large Telescope in Chile captured images of an asteroid, aiding in assessing its path and potential collision consequences. However, locating asteroids like 2024 YR4 remains challenging.
Asteroids are most straightforward to observe when they are close to Earth and reflect sunlight. While radar provides accurate measurements, it may not be useful when the asteroid approaches again in 2028, which will be about twenty times the Moon’s distance.
Infrared astronomy, mainly through the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), offers better size estimates for asteroids. Global collaboration is essential for planetary protection, with the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, acting as the central hub for reporting new asteroid discoveries.
NASA’s new Near-Earth Object Surveyor mission will use an infrared space observatory to improve detection of potentially hazardous asteroids like 2024 YR4. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is also set to support planetary defense, enhancing our tracking capabilities. Monitoring the asteroid’s close approach in 2028 will help refine predictions for 2032.
Observations made before the asteroid’s discovery are crucial for refining its orbit. This emphasizes the urgent need to monitor our skies and enhance technology to protect our planet from potential space hazards. As experts track the asteroid’s trajectory, it is imperative that we stay informed and prepared for what may come next.
