Godfather of AI sounds alarm on Google Weapons Plan

Google’s pioneer of artificial intelligence has accused the company of prioritizing profits over safety after it abandoned its commitment to refrain from using this technology in weaponry.

Geoffrey Hinton, the British computer scientist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics last year for his groundbreaking work in AI, firmly criticized the tech giant’s decision to reverse its previous commitment.

He called it a “sad example” of how companies consistently prioritize profits over essential safety concerns surrounding artificial intelligence. He stated emphatically, “This is yet another troubling instance of how corporations behave when faced with the choice between safety and profit.”

This week, Google officially changed its long-standing commitment and will use artificial intelligence to develop weapons that could harm individuals. The company asserted that free nations must leverage this technology for national security purposes, highlighting the necessity of addressing an “increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.”

Since leaving Google two years ago, Mr. Hinton has voiced his strongest criticism of the company due to concerns about uncontrollable technology. In 2012, he and two University of Toronto students developed the neural network technology foundational to modern AI. After Google acquired his startup in 2013, he contributed to advancements that led to the creation of chatbots like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

He left in 2023 to freely criticize companies for their reckless AI decisions. Mr. Hinton expressed regret over his life’s work, fearing the “existential risk” of AI surpassing human intelligence. On Tuesday, James Manyika, senior vice president at Google-Alphabet, and Sir Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, announced:

“Democracies must take the lead in AI development, firmly grounded in core values such as freedom, equality, and respect for human rights.” British computer scientist Stuart Russell condemned Sir Demis’s decision as “upsetting” and emphasized the serious risk that companies could create “affordable weapons of mass destruction” using AI systems that operate without human oversight.

It’s important to note that much of Google’s AI technology originates from the UK at its DeepMind lab. “Why is Google contributing to this?” he asked. He explained that, unlike the development of an AI superintelligence, an AI weapon doesn’t need to be particularly advanced. He stated, “You don’t have to be that smart to kill people.”

He noted that it would be entirely possible to create software capable of targeting specific groups of people and to allow an AI to control that decision-making process. Meanwhile, Google employees urged their colleagues to oppose this change in direction.

A Google employee involved with the No Tech for Apartheid campaign expressed concern, stating, “It is troubling to see Google engage in this bait-and-switch, especially considering that tens of thousands of workers would never have chosen to work for a military contractor.”

They added that this decision represents “a betrayal of Google workers’ trust” aimed at appeasing the Trump administration.  The source remarked, “This choice by executives to further engage in the militarization of the company will undoubtedly lead to increased worker organizing. As Google employees, we have a moral and ethical responsibility to resist this.”
