Doomsday Clock 2025: Scientists set new time

Seventy-eight years ago, scientists created a unique timepiece called the Doomsday Clock, symbolically measuring how close humanity is to destroying the world.

Seventy-eight years ago, scientists established a powerful symbol known as the Doomsday Clock to indicate how close humanity is to self-destruction. For the past two years, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has set the clock at an alarming 90 seconds to midnight.

This urgent stance reflects the serious threats we face, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the imminent risk of a nuclear arms race, the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, and the escalating climate crisis. It is clear that decisive action is necessary to avert catastrophe.

“We have moved the clock closer to midnight because we do not see enough positive progress on the global challenges we face, including nuclear risk, climate change, biological threats, and advances in disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence,” said the chair of the Bulletin’s science and security board, a professor in the Department of Physics, Astronomy, and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago, during a news briefing on Tuesday.

Countries with nuclear weapons are expanding the size and role of their arsenals, investing hundreds of billions of dollars in weapons capable of destroying civilization multiple times. Additionally, advancements in “disruptive technologies” like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and space exploration have significantly outpaced regulatory measures in these fields.

A significant threat escalates all of these dangers: the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and conspiracy theories. These elements degrade the communication ecosystem and increasingly blur the line between truth and falsehood.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists was established by a group of scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project, the codename for the development of the atomic bomb during World War II.

The organization was initially established to monitor nuclear threats. However, in 2007, the Bulletin chose to incorporate climate change into its assessments. Over the past 78 years, the time on the clock has adjusted based on scientists’ beliefs regarding how close humanity is to total destruction. In some years, the time changes, while in others, it remains the same.

Every year, experts set the Doomsday Clock through the Bulletin’s Science and Security Board, in consultation with its Board of Sponsors. This board was first established by Albert Einstein in December 1948, with J. Robert Oppenheimer serving as its first chair.

The board currently includes nine Nobel laureates, most of whom are recognized in the fields of physics, physiology, or medicine. The clock has effectively served as a wake-up call, reminding people of the planet’s cascading crises, although some have questioned its overall usefulness.

“When the clock is at midnight, that means there’s been some sort of nuclear exchange or catastrophic climate change that’s wiped out humanity,” she said. “We never really want to get there, and we won’t know it when we do.

2 Peter 3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last day’s scoffers, walking after their lusts,

2 Peter 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

2 Peter 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

2 Peter 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

2 Peter 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

2 Peter 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which, the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

2 Peter 3:11 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

2 Peter 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

Jude 1:14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

Jude 1:15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

Jude 1:16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts.

This is what sinners have to look forward to. On the other hand, Christians have 1 Thessalonians chapter 4 to look forward to.

1 Thessalonians 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

1 Thessalonians 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

1 Thessalonians 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

1 Thessalonians 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 4:86 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
