AI could be the breakthrough that allows humanoid robots to jump from science fiction to your home

Humanoid robots have long been a feature in science fiction, but real progress is now being made. Various new models, developed by or supported by companies such as Boston Dynamics, Tesla, and OpenAI, can walk and move like humans and perform impressive feats of agility and dexterity.

Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into humanoid robots could be the breakthrough that allows them to become a common part of everyday life, similar to how the iPhone revolutionized the smartphone market.

Large language models, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, learn from vast data to enable robots to interact with the world in a human-like manner. This relies on visual AI systems to help computers understand objects in videos and pictures, establishing machine logic about relationships and interactions.

LLMs alone wouldn’t act as the robot’s “brain”, but the technology could improve how they interact with the world. Humanoid robots have diverse potential applications and were initially developed for extreme environments, such as NASA’s Valkyrie robot for space exploration. Commercial humanoid robots will likely first be deployed in controlled environments like manufacturing.

Robots like Tesla’s Optimus and Boston Dynamics Atlas2 could transform manufacturing and logistics by performing precise and endurance-based tasks, enhancing productivity and safety alongside human employees.

In the future, humanoid robots like Optimus could help with household chores and caregiving. For example, Stanford University’s Aloha robot can cook, clean, and perform household tasks. Pending public acceptance and specialized knowledge, these robots may also be used in professional settings such as hospitals and public security.

The potential of humanoid robots in technology is undeniable, but their market viability remains uncertain. Factors such as cost, reliability, and public perception will influence their acceptance and success. Historically, new technologies have faced hurdles related to consumer trust and affordability. For Tesla’s Optimus to succeed commercially, it must prove its technical capabilities and demonstrate tangible benefits that outweigh its costs.

There are ethical considerations, too. For instance, who has access to all the data the robot collects as it interacts with humans, sometimes in what could be deeply private moments? There is also the potential for humanoid robots to displace jobs, such as in the elderly care sector, where they could have a key role.

These ethical factors will be critical in shaping public opinion and regulatory frameworks. Science fiction author Isaac Asimov drafted the Three Laws of Robotics for humans to interact with robots effectively: a robot may not injure a human being, a robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, and a robot must protect its existence as long as this doesn’t clash with the first or second law. As we’ve seen in movies, this didn’t work out very well for humans.

Revelations 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

Daniel 12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
