Major flood outburst from Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska

The capital city of Alaska, Juneau, is facing a historic flooding event following the melting of a glacier, which poured water into the city. In a concerning climate change-related disaster, Juneau residents sought shelter as the Mendenhall glacier melted this week.

The event resulted in significant property damage, with no injuries or deaths reported. Officials promptly opened a local shelter for residents and swiftly responded to emergency calls related to the flood. The sudden flood damaged over a hundred homes in the area.

In an online release explaining the situation and warning residents of what was to come, the city of Juneau compared the swell to “water overflowing out of a full bathtub.” The explanation stated, “Water flowing over the dam created by the glacier has to go somewhere – in this case, Mendenhall Lake and Mendenhall River.”

Last year, floods caused damage due to a glacial outburst. This year, the flooding was worse, with more water in the valley, streets, and people’s homes compared to the 2023 event.

The region has faced periodic flooding for over a decade due to rising global temperatures and melting glaciers. Alaskan officials describe this year’s flood as the worst ever. Climate experts say that Alaska and the rest of the Arctic are experiencing the effects of global warming at twice the rate of the rest of the world.

Alaska is experiencing higher temperatures and rapidly melting glaciers, causing flooding and floating vehicles. The Mendenhall River reached nearly sixteen feet, setting a stunning record.

Alaska’s governor, Mike Dunleavy, praised emergency workers for their response efforts and surveyed the significant damage caused by the Juneau Glacier flood, which has affected hundreds of Alaskans.

Dunleavy expressed gratitude that there were no deaths or severe injuries reported. Victims can apply for help at Alaska’s disaster assistance website. Scientists say over 14 billion gallons of water were released from the basin.

Last year, water volume increased significantly compared to when glacial outbursts began in 2011. Experts are researching ways to predict such flood events using technology and historical data, but climate change makes it hard to estimate yearly changes.

Governor Dunleavy declared a state of emergency to expedite the clean-up process and make state funds available for assistance in response to the devastating flooding.

Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Matthew 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

Matthew 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

Matthew 24:45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
