The Pentagon has announced that the U.S. is entering a “new nuclear age” and intends to overhaul its strategy to counter the nuclear threats from Russia and China. Dr. Vipin Narang, the Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy, stated that a “more competitive approach” will be implemented in response to Russia’s potential deployment of nuclear weapons in space and the increasing nuclear capabilities of China.
A high-ranking Pentagon official confidently voiced concerns about North Korea, noting that although it is not currently a nuclear peer, the country is consistently expanding, diversifying, and enhancing its nuclear, ballistic missile, and non-nuclear capabilities. Additionally, North Korea and Russia have a notably growing strategic partnership.
Narang warned of the potential need to increase deployed forces and, in certain circumstances, leave an international treaty. He outlined the “three pillars” of the United States’ new “competitive approach” and discussed the world’s threats, including those posed by Russia.
“We have discovered that Russia is working on a new satellite intended to carry a nuclear weapon in orbit. This anti-satellite capability, if deployed, could potentially destroy an entire orbit of crucial assets not only for the United States but for the entire world.
“We should all be worried about the possibility of Russia placing a nuclear weapon in space, presenting a threat to satellites operated by countries and companies worldwide, as well as to the essential communications, scientific, meteorological, agricultural, commercial, and national security services on which we all rely.”
“Detonating a nuclear weapon in space, while not directly lethal, could have catastrophic indirect effects on the world. China’s nuclear expansion, including the construction of hundreds of new Intercontinental Ballistic Missile silos, is predicted to result in over 1,000 operational warheads by 2030.”
Narang noted that the growth and diversification of the Chinese nuclear force were unexpected when the nuclear modernization program was crafted over a decade ago.
The Pentagon official also highlighted the importance of not underestimating North Korea’s weapons program, especially in light of its partnership with Russia, which he believes demonstrates the potential for collaboration and collusion between nuclear-armed adversaries.
The new approach emphasizes fielding a modern nuclear deterrent to deter strategic attacks and strengthen our network of allies and partners in NATO and the Indo-Pacific.
The Pentagon official mentioned that if Russia, China, and North Korea do not change their nuclear strategies, the U.S. may need to adjust the size or posture of its deployed forces.
The decision on this matter rests with the President. It was emphasized that the U.S. does not seek to engage in nuclear competition proactively, but would respond to actions taken by Russia, China, and North Korea.
He said, “Competition is not inevitable. If our adversaries change, we will too. But if they stay the same, the United States, with our allies and partners, is prepared to confront the challenges of a new nuclear age.”
