Earth’s salt cycle is out of balance, an existential threat

Human activities have undeniably and significantly impacted the natural landscape of our planet. From global warming to rising sea levels, climate change is indisputably occurring right before our eyes.

A recent study demonstrates another alarming outcome of humans: the Earth is becoming excessively salty, and this surplus of salt could almost entirely deplete the planet’s drinking water.

The salt we use for our food is a naturally occurring element on our planet. Salt is abundant in the Earth’s soils and water, and it moves throughout the planet in what’s known as the salt cycle.

According to researchers from the University of Maryland, the natural salt cycle involves the uplifting of salts to the Earth’s surface and their subsequent weathering and transport to the oceans. While salt is natural and beneficial, human activity is causing the Earth to become saltier, posing an “existential threat” in the very near future.

The team at the University of Maryland has collected research showing that humans are increasing the salinity of the Earth in four major ways: mining, agriculture, construction, and water treatment. Several detailed studies have demonstrated that all types of mining significantly contribute to the planet’s salinity.

Researchers also found that constant construction and extensive agriculture contribute to disrupting the natural salt cycle. Excavation leads to soil erosion, flooding, and decreased terrestrial biodiversity, affecting salination. Intensive farming adds to the planet’s salinity through soil degradation, irrigation, and reduced biodiversity.

In addition, farms around the world use a large amount of water from underground aquifers, which contain salt, to grow the necessary food for the growing population. Scientists have discovered that the rising salinity of these aquifers will significantly contribute to climate change.

When released in high doses, salt can cause serious environmental issues, such as melting ice sheets, harming entire species of animals and plants, and rendering waters and soil unusable. Salt doesn’t just enter the soil and water; it also affects the atmosphere.

This excess of salt in the air will directly cause snow and ice to melt far more rapidly than they should, and to make matters even worse; the water will be contaminated with an overabundance of salt.

Certain plants may not be able to grow at all, while others may grow more slowly or provide less nutrients with added salt in the soil and water, which could and likely will lead to a food crisis all across the planet.

Too much salt in the world’s water sources may lead to a severe shortage of clean drinking water for humans. Experts are gravely concerned about the rapid consumption of freshwater, as the planet is unable to replenish aquifers, rivers, groundwater, and reservoirs at the same pace. And if that water is contaminated with salt, we will be in trouble.

2 Chronicles 7:13 If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send diseases among my people;

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:15 Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attend unto the prayer that is made in this place

Matthew 24:45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?

Matthew 24:46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

Matthew 24:47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. And the evil servant would not be watching for his return and he would receive the same as a hypocrite.

Matthew 24:48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;

Matthew 24:50  The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

Matthew 24:51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

Matthew 7:23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work sin.
