Oklahoma’s public schools are required to incorporate teachings about the Bible and the Ten Commandments, as mandated by Ryan Walters, the state’s highest education official.
Walters clearly stated in a memorandum that the Bible and the Ten Commandments are fundamental aspects of Western civilization. He emphasized that the decision takes effect immediately.
It is essential that our students understand the core values and historical context of our country. This educational directive must be implemented before the start of the next school year, and school officials are working urgently to ensure its execution.
Oklahoma’s superintendent of public instruction, Ryan Walters, has unequivocally mandated that every classroom must have a physical copy of the Bible, the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Ten Commandments as essential resources.
The guidelines also provide details on how to include the Bible in classroom instruction for students in grades five through 12. According to the new instructional support guidelines from the Oklahoma State Department of Education, teachers are required to ensure that students learn about the Bible’s influence on shaping Western civilization and American history.
It is imperative for teachers to thoroughly study the literary techniques of the Bible and compare them with other works of literature or art. Under no circumstances should teachers promote or favor any religious beliefs.
It is essential that teachers respect diverse faiths, clearly inform parents that their teaching is not an endorsement of any religion, and emphasize that the Bible is used solely for its historical, literary, and secular value. It must not be used for religious purposes such as preaching, proselytizing, or indoctrination.
“We will ensure that Oklahoma students are taught history, which unequivocally includes the influence of the Bible as a founding document,” stated Walters firmly. Our teachers are diligently reviewing the guidance to find a path that complies with both state laws and constitutional freedoms for students and their families.
