Final Spark, a Swiss technology firm, has successfully launched Neuroplatform, the world’s first bioprocessing platform. Human brain organoids, lab-grown miniaturized versions of organs, can now perform computational tasks, replacing traditional silicon chips.
The initial facility accommodates 16 brain organoids with processing capabilities. The company asserts that these organoids use a million times less power than their silicon counterparts. Although they have revolutionized computing by making it smaller and easier to scale, Silicon-based chips are also known for their inefficiencies.
These chips’ transistors are energy-intensive, especially with the increasing demand for AI model development. Final Spark said training GPT-3 alone consumed 10 GWh of energy.
Bioprocessors use 6,000 times more energy than an average European city. Replacing silicon chips with bioprocessors could save a lot of energy. The Final Spark lets research labs use biological processors on the Neuroplatform.
The Neuroplatform uses human brain tissue to process data, making it a platform where hardware, software, and biology converge. This system is often referred to as wetware due to its biological component.
Final Spark has created multi-electrode arrays (MEAs) to work with brain tissue. Each MEA accommodates four brain organoids that interact with eight electrodes. These electrodes both stimulate the organoids and record their data.
Data is transferred using 16-bit resolution digital analog converters at a 30 kHz frequency. MEAs are supported by a microfluidic system, and their operation can be monitored by cameras. Neuroplatform software includes a stack for inputting variables and interpreting output data.
Final Spark claims its processor will consume a million times less energy than a silicon chip. However, unlike silicon chips, the biological component will eventually die and stop working, which can last for years without needing a constant energy supply.
