Will AI fight wars autonomously in the future, or are we already there? Artificial intelligence is expected to impact human life in every aspect of its existence.
Experts are rightly worried about AI in warfare. The US military recently conducted a dogfight between a human-controlled aircraft and an AI-controlled jet. AI is also being used to identify targets in war zones like Ukraine.
So, as we can see, careless deployment of AI in warfare can have devastating effects on humankind. It is essential to have human control, which must be the primary decision-maker before hitting a target.
Russia is also using Iranian drones to target Ukraine, while Ukraine is relying on its Western allies to support it with AI-guided weapons and traditional arms. Recently, Ukraine attacked several oil refineries located as far as 1300 kilometers inside Russia.
These facts highlight the direct dangers of AI for human lives and the essential resources and supply chains that sustain human civilization.
The US Air Force recently tested an AI-enabled F-16 in aerial combat as part of DARPA’s Air Combat Evolution (ACE) Project, which was initiated several years ago.
A modified F-16 research aircraft named X-62 VISTA was equipped with AI software and engaged in dogfights against stock F-16s. US Air Force officials reported that VISTA performed equally to human pilots and discussed the AI training process used on the aircraft during a press conference.
Machine learning has added a new dimension to the unmanned aircraft industry. The US military has been using these autonomous ships for decades.
However, engaging in a dogfight that requires close contact between opponents is unprecedented in aviation due to the involved risks and has never been attempted before.
Many countries are developing autonomous vehicles, both airborne and ground-based, capable of identifying and engaging targets without human intervention. According to a 2020 United Nations report, a military drone attacked soldiers in the Libyan war.
It is believed that the drone was acting independently, targeting fleeing members of the enemy militia who were escaping a rocket assault.
Looking at the practices explained above, there is no doubt that the international community should sit in one place and address these issues urgently by involving all stakeholders.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has not yet matured as a technology and is continuously evolving, showing vast potential. If not regulated properly, it may have serious consequences on the very existence of human life.
