75% of the US population would be killed in a nuclear war

According to a chilling Cold War prediction, if a nuclear war were to occur, a significant portion of the United States would be hit with radioactive fallout. This could lead to the death of up to 75% of citizens living in the most severely affected areas, leaving huge swathes of the country uninhabitable.

Despite the end of the Cold War, recent global events have reignited fears of a possible nuclear exchange, including China and Taiwan tensions, Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, and military tension between Israel and Iran.

Iran is currently expanding its uranium enrichment program. In the 1980s, scientists from the Institute of Medicine published a paper examining the possible effects of a nuclear attack on the continental United States. They theorized that an enemy attack on US nuclear storage sites could result in direct hits on the silos housing the Minuteman missiles.

In the 1950s, America developed land-based nuclear weapons that had the potential to explode at their location. Recently, a simulation depicted the devastating effects of a nuclear attack on the United States. Researchers explained how radiation would spread throughout the country after such an attack.

According to a study, it is assumed that each of the 1,116 US missile silos and missile launch-control centers would be hit by two 0.5-megaton warheads. The study predicts that if this were to happen, radiation levels could rise above 3,500 rads. As a result, more than three-quarters of the population in that region would perish.

The scientists went on to elaborate on the process behind the destruction caused by nuclear explosions. When a nuclear explosion occurs, a significant amount of radioactivity is produced, which is mostly associated with fission products that have a short lifespan. In our calculations, we have assumed that half of the attacking weapon’s yield would come from fission.

In airbursts, the fireball could carry radioactive material into the upper atmosphere. This would later filter down as global fallout over months to years.

Nuclear weapons exploded close to the ground in hard targets like missile silos can suck surface material into the fireball, mixing it with vaporized bomb products and carrying it into the upper atmosphere.

After the explosion, much of the bomb and surface materials would transform into particles. A significant portion of these particles would fall to the ground within 24 hours and create a concentrated area of fallout in the direction of the wind.
