Water Scarcity Is a Global Security Challenge

Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa, is currently facing a dire water shortage that is affecting millions of people. This issue is the result of two major factors: shrinking reservoirs and crumbling infrastructure. Countless lives and livelihoods depend on access to clean and safe water.

Water authorities warn that provincial reservoirs could drop to below 10% if consumption isn’t reduced, requiring a complete shutdown to replenish. Severe water shortages and droughts are affecting countries from Tunisia and Iran to Latin America.

Water scarcity is a global issue, with tensions often arising between states over access to transboundary rivers.

Ethiopia’s construction of a mega-dam on the Nile River has caused tension with Egypt, raising fears of a potential “water war.” However, cooperation has been more common than conflict.

Cross-border water trading deals have become more common between states, even though trade laws have not kept up with this trend. Water scarcity has significant implications at the local level. Lack of access to water can lead to insecurity, which can fuel social instability, polarization, and even conflict.t.

We’ve seen farmer-herder violence in West Africa’s Sahel region due to decreasing availability of arable land and water. Climate change has made water scarcity a global human security challenge.

Water management is becoming increasingly important in conversations about addressing climate change and in adaptation plans for areas that have already been irreversibly impacted by climate change. The list of affected areas is rapidly expanding.

Matthew 24:45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?

Matthew 24:46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

Matthew 24:47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. And the evil servant would not be watching for his return and he would receive the same as a hypocrite.

Matthew 24:48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;

Matthew 24:50  The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

Matthew 24:51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

Matthew 7:23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work sin.
