In the past 15 years, the Petermann Glacier in northwest Greenland has been melting at an alarming rate, which has caught the attention of scientists. They are investigating the reasons behind this accelerated melting, focusing on the intrusion of warm ocean water beneath the ice.
In collaboration with researchers from the University of California, Irvine, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory conducted the first large-scale observation and modeling study of northwest Greenland’s Petermann Glacier.
They aim to illuminate the potential implications of melting ice. The computer analysis shows that the sea level rise will be worse than previously estimated.
Rising sea levels could significantly impact the world, including increased flooding and a heightened risk to the livelihoods of those living in coastal areas. Scientists have used satellite data to estimate the effects of climate change on ice melting and have found that glaciers have shifted several kilometers (thousands of feet) due to changes in tides.
The ice is thinning along Petermann’s central flowline because the water beneath the ice is getting warmer, and there is a greater seawater intrusion. As a result, when the ice at the grounding zone melts, it reduces the resistance that glaciers encounter as they move toward the ocean, causing the glaciers to retreat faster.
This study confirms fears that glaciers melt faster in the ocean than previously assumed, which is imperative for predicting future sea level rise.
Once again, they are moving up the time on one of the tipping points that they have not added to their valuation.
