It is estimated that almost 700 miles of the Great Barrier Reef have already been bleached out. This could be the beginning of the most severe bleaching event in the history of the planet. The first mass bleaching event in the Great Barrier Reef occurred in 1998, and it was seen again in 2002, 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2022.
Reef fish may be unable to recognize rivals after mass bleaching events, which puts many species at risk of extinction. The Great Barrier Reef is in danger due to the worst bleaching event in history.
Coral bleaching occurs when corals expel the colorful algae living in their tissues due to heat stress. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has warned that the record-breaking ocean heat could trigger the fourth mass bleaching event. This could lead to the death of a large number of tropical reefs, and around half a trillion of them are present across the Pacific Ocean alone.
This year, the Southern Hemisphere experienced coral bleaching. A 700-mile-long section of reefs from Lizard Island to the Keppel Islands was affected, and the Great Barrier Reef was completely bleached.
Despite its distance from Australia, coral reefs in American Samoa are bleaching. This is concerning as bleaching can harm the ocean ecosystem, fisheries, and tourism. Healthy reefs are important for attracting visitors; losing them could be disastrous.
Coral bleaching affects the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. If the temperature rises by 1.5C, mass coral die-offs could occur, leading to the loss of 90% of the world’s coral. NOAA is awaiting confirmation from Indian Ocean scientists or photos to declare the fourth mass bleaching event.
The reliance on fish as a primary source of protein is a reality for approximately three billion individuals, with an additional four billion supplementing their protein intake with fish. Freshwater fish, in particular, serve as a major protein source for at least 200 million people, especially in low-income and land-locked countries. Significantly, this group includes 60 million people, over half of whom are women whose livelihoods depend on freshwater fish.
Seafood is the largest globally traded food commodity and provides animal protein to over 3 billion people worldwide through both wild-caught and farmed sources.
The demand for seafood is increasing, and aquaculture plays a crucial role in meeting this demand while preserving the sustainability of wild fish populations.
